Overview
Northlight Pictures asked for a short that feels like drifting inside a painting. Built as a fictional study, it follows a small improbable flying machine across a drowsy painted landscape — part vehicle, part character — that wakes the scenery as it passes.
The challenge
Painted animation is unforgiving: every frame is a small picture, and thousands must move as one. Keeping the palette dreamy without losing the craft in the haze meant layering the work so the machine stays crisp while the landscape dissolves around it.
Our approach
Painters built texture libraries on paper first — skies, fields, rust, glass — scanned and rebuilt as living layers. The machine's performance stays clean and readable on top, riding over pigment behaviour that shifts underneath.
- Paper-first texture library scanned at full fidelity
- Crisp character layers over dissolving painted worlds
- Drift and light effects driven by real paint behaviour
Outcome
As a fictional study, the piece is an exercise in painted flight: the texture library, the layered skies and the machine's gentle performance were developed together so the craft reads in every frame.
