Overview
Lumenarc needed a launch film with the gravity of cinema and the flexibility of animation: a harbour city at golden hour, a lone traveller, and a machine that learns to dream. We built the entire world in 3D with a semi-realistic finish — detailed enough to feel real, stylised enough to feel like a memory.
The challenge
The story hinged on scale: tiny human figures against towering cranes and hulls, with light doing half the acting. Achieving that warmth without tipping into photoreal uncanny valley meant constant calibration of materials, haze and lens language across more than forty shots.
Our approach
We blocked the whole film as an animatic first, then built the harbour as a modular set so cameras could move freely. Lighting plots were approved as still frames before animation began, and the final grade pushed amber highlights against deep teal shadows for the film’s signature glow.
- Modular harbour set reusable across sequels and stills
- Performance animation focused on silhouette and posture
- Atmospheric effects: haze, gulls, water and drifting embers
Outcome
As a fictional study, the film explores how a modular harbour set can serve many shots at once: the same cranes, hulls and haze re-dressed across scenes, with amber highlights held against deep teal shadows throughout.
